Welcome to the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Y-12 Site Office (YSO).

The mission of the NNSA’s Y-12 Site Office (YSO) is to ensure the safe, secure and cost-effective operation of the Y-12 National Security Complex.

Located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Y-12 is a key facility in the U.S. Nuclear Weapons Complex and is responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile.  Y-12 serves as the nation’s only source of enriched uranium weapons components and nuclear fuel for the U.S. Navy, as the main U.S. storage facility for enriched uranium, and is a leader in materials science and precision manufacturing.

The Y-12 Site Office is responsible for overseeing two major contracts:  management & operations (BWXT Y-12 LLC)l and Safeguards & Security (Wackenhut Services, Inc.).   YSO employees perform program oversight, contract and administrative management, and technical evaluation and assessment to meet this mission.  Y-12 has an annual budget of over $900 million and is one of the largest employers in the State of Tennessee.

Established by Congress in 2000, NNSA is a separately organized agency in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science. NNSA maintains and enhances the safety, security, reliability, and performance of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing; works to reduce global danger from weapons of mass destruction; provides the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the United States and abroad.
