Fact Sheet

Y-12 was constructed as part of the World War II Manhattan Project. The first mission was the electromagnetic separation of uranium-235. After World War II, Y-12 became a high-precision manufacturing facility and played a major role in the production of components for modern thermonuclear weapons. Since the end of the Cold War, Y-12's primary mission has supported NNSA's scientific-based stockpile stewardship mission through quality evaluation and the remanufacture of the nuclear weapons components as part of long term nuclear weapons life extension programs.
